Eighth grade students take a core academic curriculum which includes: English, Social Studies, Science, Math, and World Language. In addition, students are required to take Physical education, Guidance, and Health.
The Richmond School has a 39-period week. An eighth grade student has between 31 and 35 scheduled periods each quarter with the following distribution of required courses and periods:
An eighth grader has 4-8 periods open each week for electives, depending on the quarter. Many students take yearlong music courses: chorus, band, or strings. The remainder of the periods are filled with quarterly electives such as: art, woodworking, photography, drama, living arts, study hall, theater, music, and others. Additional periods may be filled by Special Education and Support services.
French and Spanish are year long courses that meet five times each week. Students may take only one world language; no student may take both French and Spanish. All new to the district students will need to take a world language exam so that appropriate placement can be made.
Many students enroll in music classes. All music classes are full-year electives which meet two to three times each week. When a student signs up for a music elective, they will be enrolled in the course for the entire year. If for some unforeseen reason your child needs to drop the class, then this can be done only at the end of the first semester in January.
Schedules are built around music choices. Occasionally, it is possible to schedule more than one music class. Note: If a child signs up for two music electives, there is little room in his/her schedule to participate in the other school electives and/or studies.
PLEASE ONLY SELECT EACH COURSE ONCE
Painting on Canvas is an 8th grade art offering which meets two periods per week for the entire school year.
