6th Grade World Language and Music Requests

Welcome to the Richmond School! Sixth grade students take a full-year core academic curriculum: English, Math, Social studies, Science, Physical Education and World Language.

The Richmond School has a 39-period week. A sixth grade student has 27 scheduled periods with the following distribution of courses and periods:

Many students choose to take a yearlong music course: chorus, band, or strings. Chorus and Strings meets 2 periods/week and band meets 3 periods/week. The remainder of the periods are filled with introductory electives such as Art, Music, Theater, Woodworking, Living Arts, Health, Guidance and Computer. Some periods may be filled with services such as learning center, speech, reading or others.

World Language

All incoming sixth grade students will take Spanish or French. World language courses are full-year courses that meet five times each week.

Many students enroll in music classes. All music classes are full-year electives which meet two to three times each week. When a student signs up for a music elective, they will be enrolled in the course for the entire year. If for some unforeseen reason your child needs to drop the class, then this can be done only at the end of the first semester in January.

Schedules are built around music choices. Occasionally, it is possible to schedule more than one music class. Note: If a child signs up for two or three music electives, there is little room in his/her schedule to participate in the other school electives and/or studies.

The remainder of the periods are filled with quarterly electives such as: art, woodworking, living arts, music, theater, study hall, and others. Additional periods may be filled by special education and support services.

Students new to the SAU can choose to enroll in Spanish or French.

French and Spanish are full-year courses that meet five times each week. Students may take only one world language; no student may take both French and Spanish at the Richmond Middle School. All new to the district students will need to take a world language exam so that appropriate placement can be made.
